2027: Police identify flashpoints in Abuja

In anticipation of the 2027 general elections, police forces in Abuja, Nigeria's capital, have initiated a large-scale "Show of Force" to secure the election process and deter potential political violence. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set January 16, 2027 as the date for the presidential elections across 36 states and the FCT.

This operation, directed by Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tunji Disu, targets strategic flashpoints in the capital and other regions. Deputy Commissioner of Police Isyaku Sharu explained that the initiative began in densely populated areas following intelligence reports. Sharu emphasized that the military and security agencies will not tolerate any actions that could escalate tensions, stating that the priority is ensuring the safety and security of the entire electoral process.

The operation aims to maintain high professional standards among security personnel through specialized training in the electoral code of conduct and rules of engagement. Additionally, the police plan to sign a peace accord with all FCT political party chairmen to foster political stability. Sharu noted that high-density areas are given priority due to their significant voter turnout and historical vulnerability during elections.

The operation will extend beyond Abuja Municipal Area Council to all satellite towns and area councils. Concerns about officer welfare during polling duties were addressed, with assurances that provisions are in place to support field officers throughout the electioneering process.
