Winnipeg woman saves father and child from drowning: WPS

A Winnipeg woman has been hailed as a hero after she saved a father and his child from drowning in the Red River. On August 24th, the child ventured into the water near St. John's Park and began to struggle, prompting the father to leap into the river in an attempt to rescue them. However, a witness stepped in to aid both the adult and the child.

"With remarkable bravery and selflessness, and disregarding her own safety, the witness quickly pulled the father from the water before immediately swimming to reach the child," stated the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) in a news release. Once the child was in her possession, the woman carried them to shore, providing life-saving assistance while swimming back.

Upon reaching the shore, she continued administering first aid. Police arrived at the scene shortly after 7 p.m. and took over the rescue efforts. The unconscious child was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but has since recovered fully. The WPS praised the bystander for their swift actions, emphasizing, "The bystander's timely intervention saved both the lives of the child and parent during this incident."
