When swine flu unmasks diabetes: How an undetected condition pushed patient into ICU

Megha Garg, a 41-year-old homemaker from Delhi, did not know she had type 2 diabetes when she fell ill with H1N1 influenza this month. Her symptoms started with fever on August 12 and progressed to breathing difficulties, coughing, chills, and blood in her cough. After being admitted to Apollo Hospital on August 15, doctors found Megha's HbA1c, a blood test measuring average blood glucose levels over the previous two to three months, was significantly elevated.

Dr Nikhil Modi, a respiratory medicine specialist at the hospital, explained that diabetes can weaken the immune system and increase the risk of complications from infections like influenza. The combination of severe viral infection and uncontrolled blood sugar can make it challenging for doctors to stabilize patients and may result in a higher risk of deterioration.

Megha was treated with antiviral medication, respiratory support, and glucose control measures. She stayed in the hospital for nearly a week and was discharged on August 22, but her diabetes will require ongoing management. Her family now faces a new routine, with her husband taking time off to care for her while their son manages the family shop.

Megha's case highlights the importance of recognizing undiagnosed diabetes and the potential dangers of influenza, especially for individuals with underlying health conditions.
