US Urges Hands-Off Approach to AI Regulation at G20 Tech Meeting

The U.S. urged G20 members to adopt a hands-off approach to AI regulation during a gathering of industry leaders and commerce ministers in North Carolina. The American goal aligns with the stance of the world's leading AI companies, which are predominantly American, and they desire less global regulation to support their rapid growth.

Federal government intervention could hinder the industry's profitability by slowing the launch of new models or prompting changes to product performance to address security concerns. U.S. technology adviser Michael Kratsios, co-hosting the two-day meeting, proposed adopting the "Carolina Principles." Countries that signed on agreed to avoid creating entirely new regulations for AI and instead focus on rules for unique situations involving the technology.

Chinese Technology and Science Minister Yin Hejun represented China at the meeting, while U.S. technology advisers advocated for the principles. The meeting comes at a crucial time for the AI sector and global AI governance debates as the U.S. competes with China for AI supremacy.
