US pounds Iran, Tehran strikes back at bases in biggest exchange since July

The United States and Iran have engaged in their most intense military exchange in more than a year, raising fears of a renewed conflict in the region. On Tuesday, American forces targeted Iran's southern coast, while Iran retaliated by launching strikes against U.S. military bases across the region. The U.S. vowed to carry out more aggressive attacks in response.

Iran alleged that American forces had mistakenly bombed a wedding party, resulting in the deaths of four individuals and injuries to dozens. Iran's health minister later stated that the recent wave of U.S. strikes had resulted in 18 fatalities and 108 injuries.

The fallout from the airstrikes triggered a sharp drop in Asian and European stock markets, although Wall Street initially opened higher as investors turned their attention to advancements in artificial intelligence. Oil prices showed a marginal increase, buoyed by concerns about the potential economic repercussions of the conflict. However, the market had previously soared to levels not witnessed since July, fueled by apprehensions about the war's implications for the global economy.

The U.S. military reported that it had targeted a range of Iranian assets, including air defenses, radar systems, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities, and communication sites. Iran, on the other hand, claimed it had struck multiple targets near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. As the situation unfolded, the gravity of the confrontation became increasingly apparent.
