US giant Blackstone invests $27m in Israeli cyber startup tackling malicious AI web traffic

BarVox, a startup company, has developed an innovative communication tool that utilizes advanced artificial intelligence to assist verbally impaired individuals. Unlike traditional Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices, which require eye-tracking or typing, BarVox translates verbal output into personalized speech, catering to those who are semiverbal and have verbal impairments, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

The idea for BarVox came about after Dror Levy, the company's founder and CEO, spent years interpreting verbal cues from his son, Bar, who has autism and is semiverbal. Despite Bar's independence, his speech was often unclear and struggled with pronunciation, causing frustration for both Bar and his caregivers. With three decades of experience in various technological fields, Levy set out to create a more efficient solution.

During one of Hackatism's hackathons, BarVox emerged as the runner-up, demonstrating the potential of their technology. The company now operates 30 pilot programs, collaborating with small- to medium-sized centers, including schools and adult centers. The ultimate goal is to launch a pre-seed investment round to add features and capabilities to prepare for production and integrate the system into large organizations, such as ALUT, an organization focused on the well-being of Israelis with autism.

Unlike existing AAC solutions that require users to navigate through symbols or words, BarVox directly interprets immediate verbal output, preserving the authenticity of an individual's intended verbal expression. The app can be utilized as an application on smartphones, mobile phones, or tablets, allowing users to express themselves promptly and personally. The translating voice is customizable and pleasant, aiming to maintain the user's dignity while facilitating communication and social integration.

BarVox is currently being assessed by the University of Haifa, investigating its impact on the social-emotional well-being of users. While concrete data is still pending, the company is receiving positive feedback from users, indicating that the tool is already making a difference in their lives. The ultimate aim is to provide individuals with verbal challenges the ability to communicate effectively and become part of their families, work, and careers.
