US aircraft carrier arrives in Thailand after lengthy Middle East deployment

The USS Abraham Lincoln, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier with around 5,000 crew members, docked in Thailand on Wednesday for a five-day port visit. This marks a respite after a 286-day deployment, which included a significant Middle Eastern mission and concerns over deteriorating living conditions among sailors.

Reports from Democratic legislators highlighted shortages of basic hygiene items, reduced food portions, disrupted mail services, and even instances of crew members attempting to jump overboard. The Lincoln, which embarked on its journey last November, had been subject to intense scrutiny due to these reported issues.

The carrier, accompanied by other US naval vessels, anchored in Thailand's only treaty partner in mainland South-East Asia, Laem Chabang. The ship's broad flight deck was filled with helicopters and advanced F-35 fighter jets, standing prominently amidst visible signs of wear and tear from its extensive service. A guided-missile destroyer, USS Frank E. Petersen Jr., joined the Lincoln in the port.

Upon arrival, a contingent of sailors and marines, dressed in civilian attire, greeted the public in the resort city of Pattaya, about 150 kilometers southeast of Bangkok. The US-Thai military relationship dates back to the Vietnam War, where Pattaya served as a key location for US operations. Thailand, a US treaty ally since 1954 and a major non-NATO ally since 2003, maintains strong military ties, showcasing annual joint exercises and cooperation.
