Umno chapters can discuss tie-ups for polls but central leadership has final say

The Umno Supreme Council has decided to permit state leaders to discuss and negotiate electoral agreements with other parties for forthcoming elections, but central leadership retains the ultimate authority, according to an analyst. Syaza Syukri of International Islamic University Malaysia explained that while state Umno leaders will have the initial say in any potential alliances, the final decision rests with central leadership.

She also emphasized that the likelihood of state chapters being granted full autonomy is low in the near future. The Umno Supreme Council's decision aims to adapt to the evolving political environment, acknowledging that a 'one formula fits all' approach is no longer viable, as the party's influence and voter sentiment vary across different states.
