Ukraine confirms destruction of Russian MiG-29 in Rostov Oblast

On Wednesday, the European Union grappled with how to respond to an attempted drone attack at a German airport that was allegedly carried out by Russia. The German government attributed the failed attack, which occurred on August 4 at Leipzig/Halle Airport, to Russia and subsequently announced plans to close a Russian consulate among other steps.

The incident marked a significant benchmark as the drone was discovered near a Ukrainian cargo plane and later disarmed. EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas acknowledged that the attack bore "all the hallmarks of state-sponsored terrorism" and questioned how to address such an act. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot called for stronger sanctions against Russia, including targeting more of the Kremlin's shadow fleet ships.

Despite a long history of imposing nearly two dozen sanctions packages on Russia, the EU was still considering further punitive measures. The challenge facing the EU was finding effective responses without resorting to military actions, as many member nations, particularly NATO allies, remained cautious about escalating tensions with nuclear-armed Russia.

Germany emphasized that it was "not at war" but had become a "daily target" of the Kremlin's hybrid campaign. Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed the allegations, alleging that Berlin was attempting to deflect from its own failings. However, German Foreign Minister Johanes Wadephul affirmed that Berlin had meticulously prepared its response and urged Russia to engage in reasonable dialogue, especially concerning the Ukrainian situation.

The failed attack in Germany was one of several incidents reported across Europe, including a recent fire at a major drone manufacturing facility in Poland, suspected to be the work of Russia. Russian diplomats had been routinely summoned across Europe, even expelled, due to the nation's alleged sabotage and disruption campaigns aimed at undermining Ukraine's support and destabilizing European nations.

The EU also addressed concerns about the division of the union, with Spain accusing Russia, along with Israel, of using disinformation to incite migrants to cross into its Ceuta exclave, linking migration issues to the incidents in Germany and eastern Europe. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband attended the EU meeting alongside officials from Ukraine, Canada, Norway, Switzerland, and Iceland, emphasizing their united stance against Russian aggression and their commitment to supporting Ukraine "as long as it takes for them to prevail in this conflict."
