Uganda names its crude oil blend ‘Pearl Sweet’ ahead of commercial production

Ugandan officials have officially designated the country's upcoming crude oil blend as "Pearl Sweet," a significant step as the nation prepares for commercial production by year's end. The name pays homage to Winston Churchill's late-century description of Uganda as "the pearl of Africa" and alludes to the blend's low sulfur content. The Ministry of Energy explained that the moniker blends national pride with a commercial appeal, aiding future marketing efforts and investor relations.

With an estimated 1.6 billion barrels of recoverable oil reserves, Uganda's primary investors include French oil giant TotalEnergies, which holds the majority stake, and China's National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), which owns a 15% share. President Yoweri Museveni hailed the milestone, asserting that the oil and gas resources will be harnessed for value addition and economic growth, reducing the nation's reliance on imported petroleum products.

Refining, petrochemical industries, and the utilization of associated gas for electricity generation are expected to maximize the value of Uganda's resources domestically. Production is anticipated to peak at approximately 230,000 barrels per day, with blended crude exports to be generated from separate ventures by TotalEnergies and CNOOC.

This announcement at a CNOOC oil project site in Kikuube, the site of the Kingfisher project, demonstrates progress despite setbacks since the discovery of viable crude deposits two decades ago.
