U.S. Extradites Two Nigerians Over Sextortion Linked to Teen Deaths

Two Nigerian men have been extradited to the United States to face federal charges related to alleged sextortion schemes targeting American minors. The men, Adebola Festus Adekunle, 26, and Mudasiru Afeez Olawale, 24, were apprehended in Nigeria in August 2023 as part of Operation Artemis, an FBI-led operation targeting such criminal networks. The U.S. Department of Justice announced their extradition on August 28, stating that they face separate cases in Mississippi and North Carolina.

Adekunle, arrested in Oxford, Mississippi, is charged with sexual exploitation of a minor resulting in death, production of child sexual abuse material, and other related offenses. If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 30 years for the death charges. Olawale, arraigned in Greensboro, North Carolina, is charged with similar offenses, including enticement of minors and distribution of child sexual abuse material. He also faces a life imprisonment sentence if found guilty.

The cases highlight the global reach of financially motivated sextortion networks and the dangers they pose to American families, particularly teenagers. U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche emphasized the importance of international law enforcement cooperation in dismantling such criminal networks. FBI Director Kash Patel praised the successful extradition, emphasizing that jurisdiction does not shield individuals from prosecution, regardless of international borders.

The operation involved extensive cooperation between U.S. and Nigerian authorities, including the FBI, DOJ, and Nigerian law enforcement agencies. The FBI's investigation revealed a connection between the sextortion schemes and dozens of American teen suicides. The extradition process was facilitated by various U.S. and Nigerian government bodies, with the ultimate goal of sending a message that such crimes will not go unpunished, regardless of their international nature.
