The UK dismisses Trump's remarks and reaffirms its sovereignty over the Falklands

The British government on Tuesday dismissed US President Donald Trump's remarks about potentially reviewing Washington's stance on the Falkland Islands, reaffirming its commitment to the archipelago's status. Prime Minister Andy Burnham's spokesperson stated, "The people of the Falkland Islands are British and have the right to determine their own future."

Downing Street's first response to Trump's comment came after his statement on Monday, in which he mentioned "always reviewing every position." The US president did not confirm any decision. This comes after a report in The Telegraph suggesting senior Pentagon officials were considering a review of the US position on the islands, allegedly to pressure London into increasing military spending to meet NATO's 5% of GDP requirement.

British Chancellor John Healey denied receiving such a suggestion from his US counterparts. Argentine President Javier Milei described Trump's words as "very significant" and emphasized the sovereignty claim as Argentina's "most important and sacred cause." He announced a speech to the nation on the matter, arguing that the United States needs a "reliable ally on the passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific," a claim Argentina meets.

Milei's stance contrasts with his earlier admiration for British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and defense of the islanders' right to self-determination. The United Kingdom has governed the Falkland Islands since 1833, and Argentina maintains a sovereignty claim. In the 2013 referendum, 99.8% of voters opted to retain British overseas territory status, with only three votes against out of 1,517 valid ballots, representing a 92% turnout.
