Texas Rejected an AI-Driven School’s Bid to Open a Charter. The State Still Approved It for the Voucher Program.

The artificial-intelligence-led Alpha School, a company that claims its two-hour learning model can significantly improve student academic outcomes, faced repeated rejections across multiple states for its charter school application. Despite these obstacles, the company managed to secure approval for its programs in Texas as part of a new voucher initiative.

This initiative, launched by Texas, allows private schools to earn state funding for select students' homeschooling or private school tuition, providing tax dollars to these institutions. The Texas State Board of Education initially rejected Alpha's charter school application, citing concerns about the model being "untested" and "experimental."

However, Alpha quickly shifted its focus to Texas' voucher program, bypassing the initial state education board, and successfully expanded to more than 30 campuses in Texas, primarily participating in the voucher program. Texas leaders, including the Texas Education Agency Commissioner, have implemented new guardrails, but critics argue that these standards are insufficient, as Alpha's acceptance into the voucher program came just one year after the state board rejected its charter school application.

This highlights the potential limitations of such guardrails and the ongoing challenges in regulating private schools that receive public funds.
