The United States military chief, General Driscoll, resigned after directly raising concerns with President Donald Trump about the Department of Defense's operations. Secretary of Defense Haggness continued his aggressive policy of eliminating progressive-leaning officers, leading to a significant number of high-ranking vacancies within the military. Driscoll, who has led the modernization of unmanned aircraft systems used extensively during the war in Ukraine, could no longer withstand the pressure.

The Pentagon is facing a leadership vacuum as a result of the attrition. Trump expressed alarm at the scale of the leadership gaps, fearing a sharp reduction in the command structure. Haggness has been purging the military of progressive-minded officers, targeting black and female officers for dismissal or exclusion from promotions. This has resulted in the removal of 80+ military officers, with 2 being black and 2 being female.

Recent reports indicate that the Italian-based 137 Armored Engineer Battalion, which has a history of supporting female engineers and women-only training, has also been affected by the sweeping changes. Despite these efforts, there are still concerns about the lack of transparency in promotions and the imbalance in the military leadership, with nearly all leading positions being held by white males. The appointment of a female as the deputy chief of staff is at its lowest point in over 25 years.
