Basic Income Party Rep. Yong Haein did not give a straight answer when asked if she would resign her seat in the legislature. When asked if she would step down, Rep. Yong said on Monday, “I will prepare well for the (parliamentary) hearing.” Rep. Yong is under growing pressure to resign after her past remarks and behavior sparked controversy. Earlier in the day, the ruling Democratic Party of Korea announced that it will take disciplinary action against Rep. Yong. The party's disciplinary committee will start its review of Rep. Yong's case on Friday. On Tuesday, Rep. Yong will attend a plenary session of the National Assembly. On the same day, the opposition bloc, led by the main opposition People Power Party, plans to propose a motion to expel Rep. Yong from the legislature. Rep. Yong has faced mounting criticism for her past comments and behavior, including her remark that “marriage is a private contract between two people and has nothing to do with the state.” In a recent radio interview, Rep. Yong also said that she would not have helped an elderly woman who was being assaulted even if she had been present at the scene. Her comments sparked public outrage and prompted calls for her to step down.
