Stop shifting online safety burden to children, parents – Osinbajo

Former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has called for technology companies to assume primary responsibility for protecting children from digital risks, rather than shifting that burden to children themselves or their parents. Speaking in Cairo at a high-level session on child rights and design accountability in the digital age, Osinbajo stated that it is unacceptable to design products that embed dangers and then expect families to manage the fallout.

The session, titled "Guardrails, Not Gates: Protecting Children in the Digital Age," was organized by the Justice Research Institute and aimed to shift the focus from reactive measures to actively shaping technology design. Participants, including legal experts and child rights advocates, reviewed a draft Cairo Declaration outlining six key principles for ensuring children's safety and rights in the digital world.
