South Africa aviation regulator probes low jet flypast over Cape Town stadium

Minister of Electricity and Energy Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has emphasized that coal will continue to play a significant role in South Africa's energy landscape, as the country seeks to repurpose retiring coal-fired power stations for renewable energy generation. During a site visit to the Eskom Research, Testing and Development Centre in Germiston, Ramokgopa explored technologies capable of reducing harmful emissions from existing coal operations.

The utility company aims to integrate traditional coal with renewable energy sources to sustain industrial growth and develop forward-thinking energy solutions.

The key issue for Eskom, Ramokgopa noted, is the need to meet stringent emission standards set by the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Environment. The minister made it clear that South Africa does not have a coal problem but rather an emissions problem. He acknowledged that other countries, such as China and Japan, have made more progress in this technology.
