SMART prepared for Nepal deployment, with logistics and personnel on standby, says commander

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 2 — The Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) stands ready for potential deployment to Nepal, with its personnel and resources at the ready, according to the team's commander. Senior Fire Superintendent I (PgKB I) Abdul Manaf Che Isa outlined the team's meticulous preparation, encompassing the physical and mental readiness of its members, as well as specialized equipment, communication systems, and medical readiness for ground operations.

In a statement today, Commander Che Isa affirmed that SMART is fully prepared for any deployment mission, with logistical arrangements in place for specialized equipment, communication, and health support.

The commander emphasized that SMART's preparedness allows for mobilization in the required form and scale once instructions are received for the mission. Furthermore, he noted that the Nepalese government has not yet determined the exact personnel needs, leading to SMART's readiness to be deployed as a light, medium, or skeleton team.

The mission's nature, whether focused on search and rescue (SAR) or humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), remains contingent upon Nepal's decision, as SAR efforts are currently being led by teams from China, India, and Korea, with search operations focusing on tunnel rescue.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had earlier announced that SMART would support SAR operations in Nepal, aiming to locate and repatriate affected Malaysians. Additionally, the team will collaborate with the Malaysian Embassy in Nepal to coordinate aid and safeguard the welfare of Malaysians impacted by the disaster.
