Sinabung Eruption: Karo district ensures basic needs for evacuees

Mount Sinabung, located on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, erupted on Monday, sending a plume of black ash and smoke 3,500 meters into the air. Authorities reported no immediate casualties or flight disruptions, but advised residents, visitors, and tourists to avoid nearby villages in Karo district and areas within 6 kilometers of the summit.

The eruption coated roads, vehicles, and buildings in gray ash. Local authorities distributed masks and raised the volcano alert level to "watch," the second-highest alert, expanding the safe zone around the 2,600-meter mountain. This initial eruption, officials noted, could lead to a larger one. The Geological Agency had earlier reported increased activity in mid-August and expanded the recommended radius for public activities.

Approximately 30,000 people have been displaced by volcanic activity in the area over the past few years. Indonesia, an archipelago of over 280 million people, sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an area of frequent seismic activity due to its location near a series of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.
