Senior Israeli official: Settler violence harming Israel, Syria security deal attempt failed

A senior Israeli diplomat has stated that settler violence in the West Bank is causing diplomatic damage to Israel, although incidents have declined in recent months. The number of violent incidents involving settlers has dropped, while enforcement activity and arrests have increased. March was identified as a peak month for such incidents, with both overall and serious incidents decreasing between March and July.

However, the issue persists and requires attention. Israel is taking various measures, including deploying additional personnel, increasing enforcement, and addressing those behind the violence. The Foreign Ministry is also working to present clearer evidence of enforcement actions to counter international criticism.

The attempt to establish a security agreement between Israel and Syria has failed. One complicating factor was the easing of sanctions imposed on Syria, which reduced Syria's motivation to pursue the agreement. Israel was unwilling to withdraw from the buffer zone, viewing it as a security asset. Despite the failure of the security agreement, communication channels with Syria remain open.

Disarmament of Hamas remains a central issue in negotiations with Gaza, with Israel insisting on all conditions being met, including disarmament, before progress can be made. Israel is continuing to engage in diplomatic efforts, including through working groups with the Peace Council, to address various issues, such as Hamas disarmament and humanitarian concerns.

The international stabilization force (ISF) has yet to reach the implementation stage, with discussions ongoing with various countries. Israel maintains a cautious stance towards Lebanon, questioning the effectiveness of UNIFIL and exploring alternative mechanisms, such as training units of the Lebanese Armed Forces or a verification mechanism.
