Rosenberg: Putin’s veiled threat to UK part of Russia’s campaign against West

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned the United Kingdom and the West during a press conference that striking military targets in the UK could be a possibility in response to British arms supplies to Ukraine. Putin's response, "That’s a secret. A military secret," was vague, leaving the audience curious about his intentions. This vague statement is likely a form of psychological pressure and a way to make the UK reconsider its support for Ukraine.

This tactic reminds me of a newspaper article that suggested UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham should be dreaming of Russia instead of his nightmares. Although there is no concrete evidence of Russian missiles being used against UK targets, similar incidents have occurred in other European countries. For instance, Germany attributed a drone attack at Leipzig airport to Russia and accused Germany of planting the evidence.

Putin compared Western countries to sharks, threatening that if anyone tries to "drag us down the food chain" or "gobble us up," Russia might retaliate. The Kremlin's leader also claimed he is open to negotiations with the US administration, specifically mentioning Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff as potential negotiators. However, no mention was made of the CIA director who visited Moscow recently.

It remains unclear if these potential contacts will occur in the near future. Despite the ongoing losses in the war and the country's economic struggles, Putin remains confident that the enemy will "crumble" and he remains determined that any peace in Ukraine should be on Russia's terms.
