The theft took place around noon on August 29 at a property room situated near Central Building in Pune. Chitekar, who reportedly consumes alcohol, was collecting scrap when he reached the property room, forced open the rear door, and entered. Initially, he allegedly stole beer bottles and consumed the alcohol before stealing the seven pistols kept as case property.
He carried the firearms with him throughout the day, eventually pointing one at a man and threatening him around 10:30 pm, which led to his apprehension at the police station. During questioning, Chitekar admitted to the theft, revealing that he had stolen six more pistols. The bag containing the six firearms was found near a tree at the General Post Office area after a night-long search.
