Prime Minister’s Department blocks airing of ‘Madu atau Racun’ over religious‑sensitivity concerns

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 2 — Malaysia's Prime Minister's Department (JPM) has declined to permit the broadcast of the drama Madu atau Racun, due to concerns over religious sensitivities and potential controversy. Zulkifli Hasan, a Senator in the Prime Minister's Department responsible for Religious Affairs, expressed disappointment in the inclusion of elements that conflict with religious beliefs and cultural norms, either directly or indirectly.

In a statement released today, Hasan emphasized that the integration of content opposing Islamic teachings and Eastern cultural values must be curbed, with the aim of preserving the faith and moral values of the community, especially the younger generation.

Hasan affirmed that Islamic principles uphold the family institution and religious decorum, contrasting with the portrayal of deviant lifestyles, which are at odds with these noble values. Consequently, Zulkifli indicated that the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) would collaborate with pertinent agencies to scrutinize the content and implement suitable actions, adhering to the Jakim's Content Screening Guidelines for Islamic-Themed Broadcasting Materials (Jakim No. 4/2015) and applicable legal provisions.

This decision aimed to guarantee that all broadcast material is appropriate and respects the religion's sanctity.

Furthermore, Zulkifli appealed to creative industry professionals, including producers and broadcasters, to exercise caution and responsibility by adhering to established official guidelines when crafting works that promote positive values and contribute to national development. He emphasized that the arts sector and media platforms should serve as tools for instilling virtuous values instead of fueling controversies that may undermine societal harmony.

Zulkifli also called upon the Muslim community to stand united in safeguarding the religion's sanctity and moral integrity through steadfastness and wisdom.
