Panstar Akro Enters Arctic Waters After Busan Departure

Nine days following its departure from Busan New Port, the domestic container ship Panstar Akro made history by opening the Arctic Ocean's waterway for the first time. According to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, the vessel entered Arctic waters on Aug. 31 around 7 a.m., following its passage through the Bering Sea on Aug.

30. This voyage marks a significant milestone as it is the first instance of a domestic shipping company employing a container ship to pioneer the Arctic route. The Panstar Akro, which left Busan on Aug. 22, is presently navigating along its intended path without encountering any major issues. The Ministry released footage showing the ship moving forward amidst a multitude of ice floes surrounding its hull, with the crew closely monitoring real-time ice condition data to ensure a safe journey.

A representative from the Panstar Group stated that the vessel is currently sailing along the Russian coast, skillfully maneuvering around the ice floes and remaining in a secure state. The ship will continue its journey along the Northeast Passage, which skirts north of Russia, and is projected to traverse the Vilkitsky Strait, a critical bottleneck situated between Russia’s Taymyr Peninsula and the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago, on approximately September 10.

Following a safe passage through the strait, it is anticipated that the vessel will accelerate towards Europe, with a target entry date of Sep. 14 at the Port of Felixstowe in the United Kingdom. The success of this test operation is considered crucial in evaluating the potential utilization of the Arctic route by the domestic logistics industry in the future.

The government and the shipping company intend to provide support by continuously monitoring weather conditions and glacier movements throughout the remaining voyage period. Should the Panstar Akro arrive in the United Kingdom as planned, this accomplishment will establish a new milestone in the history of domestic shipping.
