Over 2,000 immigrants arrested in New York: US Homeland Security official

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents conducted Operation Rotten Apple, arresting 2,197 immigrants in New York State from late July to late August. The operation, led by US Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, aimed to remove dangerous individuals such as murderers, rapists, pedophiles, drug traffickers, and violent assailants.

Mullin criticized sanctuary city politicians in New York City and Governor Kathy Hochul for refusing to cooperate, stating that they prioritized releasing criminals into the streets. Hochul denied the accusations, insisting that New York is not a sanctuary state for criminals and accused the administration of undermining public safety efforts.

The Department of Homeland Security is withholding 40% of New York State's counterterrorism funding, according to Hochul, who challenged the administration's claims. Mayor Zohran Mamdani echoed similar sentiments, expressing concern over the chilling effect on immigrants across the nation.
