Orihuela seeks new traders to fill vacant pitches at weekly markets

The town of Orihuela is seeking new market stall holders to fill vacant spots in its weekly markets, according to a recent press release from the Town Hall. The Markets Department hopes to attract more traders to increase the variety of products and services available to shoppers. Councillor Noelia Grao explained that attendance at some weekly markets has declined in recent years, leaving empty pitches.

The town intends to launch a new application process to encourage new traders to join the markets, covering all markets within Orihuela and its surrounding areas. A similar scheme was introduced in 2024, but not all vacancies were filled due to applicants failing to meet conditions or providing incomplete paperwork. The updated process aims to bring unused pitches back into operation and increase options for visitors to the municipality's markets.

To be eligible for a pitch, applicants must meet legal requirements, including registration with Social Security and tax authorities, as well as obtaining appropriate public liability insurance. The new application process will provide an opportunity for existing traders and newcomers alike to apply for vacant pitches. Grao emphasized that the markets are integral to the daily life of Orihuela and its communities, particularly in smaller districts where they bring goods closer to residents and complement local shops.

The Town Hall expects the new application process to successfully fill more of the available spaces since the 2024 scheme. Full details, including the markets involved, the number of pitches, requirements, and application deadlines, will be announced once the process is officially published.
