One of MacKenzie Scott’s latest donations takes her HBCU giving to well over $1 billion

MacKenzie Scott has made a significant donation of $42 million to Elizabeth City State University on the school's Founders Day in North Carolina, pushing her total giving to historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) well beyond the $1 billion mark. This gift is part of Scott's $26 billion philanthropic commitment since 2020, which has been directed towards thousands of organizations focusing on diversity, equity, inclusion, disaster recovery, community development, health, and environmental causes.

Elizabeth City State University Chancellor S. Keith Hargrove expressed his gratitude, stating that Scott recognizes the critical role HBCUs play in expanding opportunity and strengthening communities. The donation will support the school's ASCEND 2030 strategic plan, which aims to enhance student opportunities and strengthen ties with the surrounding community.

Scott's generosity extends to other HBCUs as well, including Howard University, which received a $80 million donation in 2025, making it one of the largest gifts in the school's 158-year history. Other notable donations include $42 million to Alcorn State University, $50 million to Bowie State University, and $63 million to Morgan State University.
