Nyoro: Ruto is making it hard for his successor to govern

Ndindi Nyoro, the Member of Parliament for Kiharu, has given an interview detailing the reasons behind his falling out with President William Ruto. Nyoro explained that their friendship gradually eroded following their disagreement over the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in 2024. In a TV interview on September 2, 2026, Nyoro stated that despite remaining loyal to Ruto, he felt his loyalty was not reciprocated.

The strain in their relationship began in 2024 during a meeting involving Mt Kenya leaders. The meeting was intended to declare Kithure Kindiki, the Interior Cabinet Secretary at the time, as their link to the government. Nyoro recounted how this situation strained their previously close bond, as Ruto had called him the evening of the meeting, asking him to attend and report back. Nyoro felt that this request placed him in an uncomfortable position and declined to participate.

The relationship further deteriorated during the impeachment proceedings against Gachagua. Despite being close to other government officials during this time, Nyoro chose not to support the impeachment motion, citing his conscience over political considerations. This decision came at a time when the president was in New York, calling on others to sign the impeachment papers. When the president called Nyoro, he explained that he would not be signing the papers.

Nyoro's decision not to participate in the impeachment, along with his subsequent withdrawal from the Budget and Appropriations Committee chairmanship, marked a significant point in the deterioration of his relationship with Ruto. Nyoro emphasized that the distance between them was not a sudden event but rather a gradual process.
