NPP Volta Leadership Split Over Regional Officer Appointments

A leadership split has emerged within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Volta Region over the appointment of 10 officers to regional positions. The controversy was sparked by Regional Chairman Makafui Kofi Woanyah's announcement of the appointments on August 26, which were made in consultation with the National Executive Committee (NEC) and in line with Article 9(2) of the NPP Constitution, amended in 2025.

However, the elected Regional Executives have rejected these appointments, asserting that they were neither considered nor approved at a duly constituted meeting of the Regional Executive Committee. According to the Secretariat, the appointments cannot be considered as decisions of the elected Regional Executives because the proper process as per Article 9(10) of the NPP Constitution was not followed.

No official meeting of the newly elected Regional Executives was convened to deliberate on, consider or approve the appointments. The 10 appointed officers include the Regional Financial Secretary, Deputy Regional Organiser, Deputy Regional Women’s Organiser, Deputy Regional Youth Organiser, Deputy Nasara Organiser, Electoral Affairs Officer, Research Officer, Persons with Disabilities (PWD) Coordinator, Legal Representative, and Regional Special Duties Officer.

The Regional Secretariat has declared the appointments "null and void" and urged party members and the public to disregard them. This dispute has exposed the contrasting positions of the Regional Chairman, who claims the appointments were correctly made in consultation with the national leadership, and the elected Regional Executives, who are contesting their validity on constitutional grounds.
