North-Eastern varsity approves 65% salary increase for staff

North-Eastern University in Gombe has approved a significant salary increase of between 40 and 65 percent for all its staff, effective immediately. This move was spearheaded by the university's Pro-Chancellor and Founder, Dr Sani Jauro, aiming to enhance staff welfare and maintain academic excellence. According to the university's Public Relations Officer, Mukthar Sani Saulawa, this is the third major salary adjustment by the founder in three years.

Previously, staff salaries were increased by up to 35 percent in October 2023 and another 20 percent in October 2024 following the university's accreditation success in the National Universities Commission (NUC) exercise. The latest increase comes as the university prepares to graduate its first batch of students and host its inaugural convocation in November/December 2026.

North-Eastern University is the only institution in the region with full accreditation from the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON) for its Architecture program, highlighting its growing academic and professional reputation. Jauro, influenced by his experience as a university lecturer, emphasized his commitment to staff welfare despite the escalating costs of running a university.

He also announced a 50 percent scholarship for students admitted into six programs, including Petroleum Chemistry, Environmental Management and Toxicology, Industrial Chemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology, and Urban and Regional Planning. These programs were chosen due to their relevance to sectors such as petroleum, energy, industrial, and environmental, particularly in the context of emerging opportunities around the Kolmani development in Gombe and Bauchi states.
