Nigerian music lawyer Akinyemi Ayinoluwa reveals factors driving Nigeria’s music success

Nigerian music lawyer Akinyemi Ayinoluwa has shed light on a few key factors behind the booming success of Nigeria's music industry. In an interview on Hitz 103.9 FM, Ayinoluwa spoke to Cruise Control host Merqury Quaye and Maame Adwoa Akotaah about the advantages his nation's talent enjoys. He pointed out that Nigeria's immense population provides a large domestic market and numerical edge to its creative minds.

"With the power of numbers and the population, it kind of gives them an advantage," he asserted. He further categorised Nigerians as "flamboyant," "loud mouthed" and "braggadocious," traits that often convert into confidence and determination in the entertainment business. According to Ayinoluwa, the competitive spirit of Nigerians - their eagerness to outdo each other - is another driving force in the success of many of their artists.

"You know, with Nigerians, immediately you do a two-million-dollar deal, the other Nigerian wants to do a three-million-dollar deal," he remarked, emphasising this competitive edge. Beyond Nigeria's borders, Ayinoluwa believes the size of the Nigerian diaspora worldwide also plays a crucial role in the global reach of Nigerian music.

"And also I think the diasporan population all over the world also helps," he said. Akinyemi Ayinoluwa is an accomplished entertainment lawyer and the founder of Hightower Solicitors and Advocates, where he focuses on music law and defends the rights of recording artists, songwriters, producers, record labels, music investors and talent managers.

He has been advocating for the underrepresented songwriters and record producers in the music industry for over a decade. In 2025, Ayinoluwa was recognised by Billboard as one of the Top Music Lawyers, the only Nigerian lawyer on the list that year. His firm has represented renowned Afrobeats producers like Magicsticks, Ragee, Rexxie, Blaq Jerzee, Masterkraft and Marvey Musique.
