New senior citizens’ welfare department takes shape in Keralam

The newly established Department of Senior Citizens' Welfare in Keralam is progressing towards full operational readiness. Key positions from various departments have been reassigned to the new department, including roles from General Administration, Personnel and Administrative Reforms. A budget of ₹10 crore has been allocated for its functioning and the implementation of senior citizen welfare schemes.

Proposed initiatives cover protection, care, healthcare, social security, and productive ageing for the elderly population. Given the state's aging demographics, the creation of a dedicated department is seen as crucial to addressing the multifaceted needs of senior citizens. Beyond providing financial aid, the department aims to develop a comprehensive program for their well-being.

The department will oversee laws and regulations pertaining to senior citizens, enforce the state's senior citizen policy, and manage various welfare schemes. Efforts are underway to establish a state-level directorate for senior citizen welfare and district-level offices, along with a governing council to coordinate all welfare measures.

A statewide survey of senior citizens is also planned. A 24-hour helpline for emergencies will be managed by a Rapid Response Team, while a field response officer will ensure immediate assistance. Senior citizen facilitation desks will be set up in local self-government institutions. The government plans to promote interaction between senior citizens and the younger generation, and a dedicated online portal will be created to manage various registers and registers.

Initiatives like a Dementia-Friendly Keralam program and senior citizen-friendly health protocols are in the final stages.
