Netflix docuseries on Matthew Perry’s life beyond Friends: ‘To see him as a whole person’

Netflix has announced the premiere date for a three-part documentary series about Matthew Perry, the actor best known for his role as Chandler Bing in the long-running sitcom Friends. Titled "The One About Matthew Perry," the series will premiere on October 27 and will delve into the life and legacy of the beloved star.

Mary Robertson, an Emmy-winning director, is behind the project for her production company, Maxine Productions, a division of Sony Pictures Television. Among the executive producers are Lisa Kalikow, Eli Holzman, and Aaron Saidman, with Lora Moftah serving as co-executive producer and Jessica Call as producer.

The documentary promises to be the first comprehensive look at Perry's life, featuring interviews with those closest to him. Central to the series is Perry's sister, Mia Perry Bowick, a licensed psychotherapist, writer, and speaker. While Bowick was not involved in the production, Perry's lifelong friends and other key figures in his life will share their perspectives on his life and career.

Netflix highlighted Perry's nearly decade-long tenure as Chandler Bing, noting that he transformed everyday awkwardness into memorable sitcom lines throughout 236 episodes. The series will also incorporate never-before-seen photographs and home videos from Perry's family archive, along with recollections from his creative collaborators, to provide a more complete portrait of his career and private struggles.

Matthew Perry was found dead on October 28, 2023, at his Los Angeles home at the age of 54. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office ruled his death as the result of acute ketamine effects. Perry had spoken openly about his long struggle with substance abuse before his passing.
