Nepal Flood Disaster: Maharashtra Begins DNA Profiling To Identify Deceased Indians, Relatives Asked To Visit Centres On September 3

On September 3, the Maharashtra State Disaster Management Department initiated DNA profiling to identify the deceased Indian citizens who lost their lives in the Nepal flood disaster. Relatives of the deceased from the state were urged to visit designated Forensic Science Laboratories on the same day between 10 am and 6 pm for DNA sample collection.

When visiting the centers, relatives are required to bring three passport-size photographs and a valid identity proof such as an Aadhaar Card or PAN Card. The physical presence of at least two close relatives of the deceased, including the father, mother, son or daughter, is mandatory.

DNA profiling was deemed essential for establishing the identities of the deceased and ensuring that relevant information reaches their families. The Maharashtra State Disaster Management Department therefore encouraged relatives to promptly report to the designated centers with the necessary documents.

DNA sample collection and related procedures would be facilitated at the Forensic Science Laboratories in Mumbai, Pune, and Nashik. For residents of Mumbai, samples would be collected at the Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratories located at Hans Bhugra Marg, Kalina, Santacruz East, Mumbai-98.

For those residing in Pune, the facility is situated at the Regional Forensic Science Laboratory near Chaturshringi Police Station. In Nashik, the laboratory is located opposite Vidyut Nagar on Dindori Road, Lok Sahakarnagar. The department assured that necessary arrangements had been made to streamline the identification process for the deceased and their families.
