Jubilee presidential hopeful Fred Matiang’i denounced the abduction of Standard Media editor Alex Kiprotich, emphasizing that assaults on journalists undermine Kenya's democratic principles and press freedom. Speaking on a local radio station on September 2, 2026, Matiang’i emphasized that the reported kidnapping of Kiprotich, who was eventually recovered after approximately nine hours, is intolerable in a nation that has cultivated its global standing on press freedom and freedom of expression.

"This is shocking and infuriating," Matiang’i declared. Matiang’i underscored that freedom of expression and press freedom are integral to Kenya's national identity and democratic framework. "Freedom of expression and press freedom is our way of life as a country," he stated. He cautioned against allowing government officials to exploit their authority to suppress journalists or curtail legitimate critique.

"If someone is making errors while performing their duties, legal action should be taken against them," he contended. "Such procedures are available in court. It is unacceptable to apprehend someone at night like this." He argued that Kenya possesses the requisite institutions and courts to address disputes and alleged offenses, rendering unlawful detention or abduction wholly inappropriate.
