Mumbai Ganeshotsav 2026: BMC To Train 8–10 Volunteers From Each Mandal In Emergency Response

Mumbai, September 2, 2026: The BMC's Disaster Management Department has announced plans to train at least 8-10 volunteers from each Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav mandal throughout the city in emergency response and first responder techniques. The training program, set to take place over a single day, will focus on preventive safety measures, disaster preparedness, and effective emergency response during the annual festival.

The decision comes in the wake of the tragic Bhuleshwar incident, where a 22-foot Ganesh idol's collapse resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to five others. With this in mind, the BMC is taking proactive steps to enhance safety and preparedness measures ahead of the upcoming Ganeshotsav festivities.

Volunteers participating in the program will receive comprehensive training on managing large crowds during darshan, handling electrical accidents, fires, and health-related emergencies. The curriculum will also include practical demonstrations on first aid and CPR techniques. The one-day training sessions will be conducted across all 26 administrative wards of the Mumbai Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), with coordination between ward offices and local Ganeshotsav mandals.

Given the massive influx of devotees and tourists during the Ganeshotsav, the training will cover essential aspects such as crowd management, preventive measures to avoid accidents, precautions during prasad distribution, and appropriate emergency response procedures. Each mandal is expected to send a minimum of 8-10 volunteers to participate in the one-day programme, with the ultimate goal of fostering community involvement in emergency preparedness and response efforts, according to a civic official.

The initiative is expected to receive support from multiple agencies, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade, the BMC's Electrical Supply and Transport Department, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the Mumbai Police. The BMC administration has urged all Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav mandals across the city to participate in the program and contribute to ensuring a safe, well-managed, and environmentally responsible Ganeshotsav festival.
