MLA swimmer Sophia Umstead makes first U.S. National Team after huge summer

After triumphing at the U.S. National Championships during the summer, swimmer Sophia Umstead achieved another milestone. The Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics swimmer, who trains in Holland, was chosen by USA Swimming to join their inaugural national team. Umstead, a former Jenison state champion, currently competes for the University of Virginia.

She was among 46 women across the nation selected for the 2026-27 national team roster. Umstead expressed her immense pride on social media, stating, "I am so incredibly honored to have made my first ever USA National Team!"

This accomplishment marks a dream come true for Umstead, who credited her coaches, family, friends, and teammates for their unwavering support. She also expressed gratitude to the University of Virginia for an exceptional year. Looking ahead, Umstead expressed excitement for the future and showed her support for Team USA by declaring, "Go USA!"

Umstead is one of several swimmers from Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics who have made the national team, including Courtney Bartholomew, Chris DeJong, and Devon Nowicki. The roster comprises swimmers from 29 states and 22 universities, showcasing the depth of talent in the country. This year's list draws from results spanning September 1, 2025, to August 31, 2026.

The roster includes both seasoned athletes like Umstead, who made her first national team, and seasoned veterans such as Katie Ledecky, who has been named to the team 15 times. USA Swimming National Team Executive Director and Coach Greg Meehan expressed enthusiasm about the combination of experienced athletes and emerging talent, emphasizing the potential for success as they build toward the LA28 Olympics.
