Marsabit community land registrar was designated in 2021, court told

The Chief Land Registrar for Marsabit County, David Nyandoro, has revealed that the Community Land Registrar was designated in January 2021, two years prior to an applicant's inquiry. This information was disclosed in response to a court order seeking details of the official responsible for the role. James Gitau, the applicant, had requested the name and designation date of the Community Land Registrar for Marsabit in May 2023.

In a letter to the High Court, Nyandoro stated that 113 senior Land Registrars had already been designated as Community Land Registrars on January 28, 2021, following the provisions of Section 9 of the Community Land Act. Gitau had inquired about the designation date and reasons for any delays in the appointment process. The Office of the Attorney General did not respond to Gitau's request, leading to his appeal to the Commission on Administrative Justice, which subsequently ordered the Chief Land Registrar to provide the requested information within seven days.

Wanjohi Gichuki was identified as the designated Community Land Registrar for Marsabit County, with a report submitted to Land Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome on June 29, 2026. Marsabit County does not possess its own Land Registry; instead, Isiolo Land Registry handles all land registrations within the county. In March 2024, Marsabit County government submitted an inventory of 18 unregistered community land units based on electoral wards.

Three communities in Marsabit—Laisamis, Logologo, and Karare—have conducted elections, selected Community Land Management Committees, and received certificates of registration.
