María Méndez Fernández is a Spanish professional footballer born on April 10, 2001, in Oviedo, Asturias. She is a centre-back for Liga F club Real Madrid and the Spain women’s national team. Renowned for her defensive skills, aerial prowess, leadership, and goal-scoring ability from set pieces—particularly headers—she earned the nickname "Pecas" during her early career at Real Oviedo.

The younger sister of former player turned coach Miguel Méndez, María's love for football is attributed to watching her brother play as a child.

Mendez began her youth career with Oviedo Moderno, moving to the B team around 2015–2016. She made her senior debut for Oviedo's first team at a young age and played as a midfielder before transitioning to defense. In 2019, she transferred to Deportivo de La Coruña, later known as Deportivo Abanca, where she quickly adapted to top-tier football and scored goals.

In 2020, she joined Levante UD, where she became a key player and captain, helping the team qualify for UEFA Women's Champions League stages multiple times. In July 2024, she signed with Real Madrid, where she has been a reliable center-back in Liga F and UEFA Women's Champions League competitions.

Mendez has represented Spain at various youth levels, including the under-17, under-19, and under-23 teams. She debuted for the senior national team in November 2022 and has since been a regular selection, contributing with goals in important matches such as the UEFA Nations League.
