Kelantan’s Nik Mohamad Abduh begins second Senate term after taking oath of office

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 2 — Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz, formerly the MP for Bachok, assumed his role as a senator for a second three-year term today, receiving his oath of office from Dewan Negara President Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah in the Senate chamber at Parliament. The Kelantan State Legislative Assembly re-elected Nik Mohamad Abduh, under Article 45(1)(a) of the Federal Constitution, with his tenure commencing on July 7, 2026, and concluding on July 6, 2029.

The son of the late Kelantan Menteri Besar, Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, previously held the position of senator for Kelantan for his inaugural term from July 8, 2023, to July 7, 2024, in addition to serving as the Member of Parliament for Pasir Mas and Bachok. During his declaration speech, Awang Bemee underscored that Nik Mohamad Abduh's re-election attests to the enduring faith placed in his credibility, experience, and capacity to make a significant impact on parliamentary activities and the overall functioning of the institution.

He highlighted that the senatorial oath imposes a solemn obligation to uphold the Constitution, advocate for the well-being of the populace, and ensure that the concerns of all states receive their due recognition. Awang Bemee emphasized that Nik Mohamad Abduh's proven performance during his initial Senate term will be utilized to fortify the institution's functions, champion Kelantan's interests, and scrutinize national policies and legislation.

Furthermore, Awang Bemee pledged Parliament's dedication to fortifying the nation's legislative body, including the implementation of the Parliamentary Service Act, which is vital for reinforcing the principle of separation of powers, enhancing checks and balances, and bolstering Parliament's autonomy and stature. According to the parliamentary timetable, the Senate's Third Meeting of the Fifth Term of the 15th Parliament will transpire over a span of 14 days, commencing on November 30.
