Keir today, gone tomorrow: A London by-election may spell danger for Labour

Holborn and St Pancras has been a Labour stronghold for four decades, but the emergence of the Greens and the by-election atmosphere could be troublesome for the party as Keir Starmer prepares to step down as their MP, as reported by Douglas Beattie. Starmer's decision to quit, although met with mixed reactions from his party, aligns with his stated intention to retire in July.

His political career, which began relatively late, has been noteworthy. Rumors of Starmer's candidacy began circulating in 2014, and he was officially selected as Labour's candidate in Holborn and St Pancras in December 2014. Despite Labour's strong performance in 2015 and subsequent elections, the seat saw a reduction in size following boundary changes in 2024, making it more vulnerable in a by-election.

The Greens, led by Zack Polanski, are expected to challenge Labour, while the Greens' local independent candidate, Andrew Feinstein, who previously contested the 2024 election, is also likely to enter the fray. Labour is reportedly preparing for a potential straight contest with the Greens, emphasizing the seat's significance as a crucial Labour asset in London.
