Kalonzo discusses IEBC preparedness, political intolerance with UK envoy

Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka met with British High Commissioner Matt Baugh on September 2, 2026, to discuss Kenya's electoral readiness and political climate ahead of the 2027 General Election. The talks centered around the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and the growing intolerance in the country.

Kalonzo emphasized the need for a well-prepared IEBC to maintain the legitimacy of democracy and stressed that dissent should not be equated with enmity. The Wiper Patriotic Front, led by Kalonzo, reiterated its commitment to non-violence and free, fair elections. High Commissioner Baugh was appreciated for his ongoing support for Kenya's democratic process.

IEBC chairman Erastus Ethekon also defended the commission's independence during a National Election Security Roundtable, dismissing concerns about a potential switch to a new election management system from South Korea's MIRU Systems. Ethekon stressed that any such narrative could risk public confidence in the electoral process, vowing that the IEBC would uphold its independence at all costs and believed Kenya's institutions could deliver a peaceful and credible election.
