Heliophysics Education Community meeting presentation – June 2026

On June 2026, the Heliophysics Education Community hosted a presentation on their research into the causes of flickering auroras. Two scientists, Drs. Marilia Samara and Robert Michell, who are principal investigators of rocket missions, flew through active auroras to uncover the origins of these phenomena.

Auroras are formed when particles from the Sun collide with Earth's magnetic field, resulting in vibrant displays of color near the poles. However, some auroras can flicker, pulse, or appear with irregular gaps. By studying these dynamic auroras, the scientists aim to gain a better understanding of our space environment and safeguard spacecraft and astronauts from potential disruptions.

Launching sounding rockets allows researchers to investigate the various types of auroras, providing valuable insights into the underlying causes and improving our ability to monitor and protect our technological infrastructure from the hazards posed by space weather.
