HeFRA investigates woman’s death at Ridge Hospital, promises sanctions if negligence is established

The Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) has launched an investigation into the death of 31-year-old Theresa Boakye Dapaah following a cesarean section at Ridge Hospital, commonly known as Greater Accra Regional Hospital. Dr Winfred Korletey Baah, the HeFRA CEO, stated that the agency is awaiting a formal report from the hospital management regarding the circumstances surrounding Theresa's passing.

This comes after allegations of negligence were made against the hospital and its medical staff by Theresa's husband, Daniel Ofori-Sarpong, who expressed his grievances on Facebook prior to the funeral preparations. Dr Baah informed Starr FM that conversations have already been held with Ridge Hospital management, and the facility is expected to submit its report shortly.

He emphasized that HeFRA will impose sanctions if the investigation reveals breaches in the provision of care. These sanctions could include disciplinary action against individuals or the facility itself if systemic issues are identified. The agency is committed to taking appropriate disciplinary measures, such as referring doctors to the Medical and Dental Council or nurses to the Nursing and Midwifery Council for appropriate disciplinary action.

HeFRA views such incidents as an opportunity to identify weaknesses in the healthcare system and enhance patient care. The agency will review Ridge Hospital's report before deciding on any further action.
