Gideon Moi-led KANU Party demands independent probe into abduction of Standard Group editor

The Kenya African National Union (KANU) party, led by Gideon Moi, has called for an independent and transparent investigation into the abduction of Standard Group journalist Alex Kiprotich. The party's Secretary General, George Wainaina, condemned the "brazen and disturbing" incident, stating that the responsible individuals must be identified and prosecuted.

Kiprotich was abducted near Masinga Dam on September 2, 2026, after being intercepted by armed men along the Gilgil-Nakuru Road earlier that day. The KANU party emphasized that the latest incident should not be treated as isolated, as Kiprotich had previously reported an attempted abduction in June 2026, which remains unresolved.

Wainaina highlighted that Kiprotich had filed a complaint at Menengai Police Station but claimed no action was taken to apprehend the perpetrators. The party demanded a comprehensive investigation into both incidents, emphasizing that the protection of journalists is a constitutional right and cannot be compromised by unlawful detention or abduction.

The Standard Group, Kiprotich's employer, also advocated for an independent probe into his abduction and the June 27 incident, expressing concerns over potential intimidation of their newsroom.
