Four file for NPP national chairmanship as Wontumi withdraws

Four individuals have submitted their nominations for the position of National Chairperson within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), prior to the scheduled national executive elections on October 3, 2026. The prospective candidates include Paul Afoko, the former National Chairman; Boakye Agyarko, a former Energy Minister; Sammy Crabbe, a previous Greater Accra Regional Chairman; and John Boadu, the former General Secretary.

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, withdrew from the race, decreasing the total number of candidates from five to four. John Boadu announced his intention to run an inclusive administration that would support members from various factions, regions, and age groups. His campaign is based on the theme "Reunite, Reorganise and Recapture."

Boakye Agyarko emphasized the importance of overcoming internal divisions within the party and uniting around a shared objective for the 2028 general election. John Agyarko expressed confidence in the NPP's capacity to overcome its current political challenges and return to government, urging party members not to lose hope. He emphasized the party's capability to rebuild itself and support the presidential ambitions of its flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The National Officers Elections Committee (NOEC) set the deadline for nominations submission on August 29, after which the aspirants would undergo a vetting process. This vetting is expected to occur between August 31 and September 3, culminating in the announcement of the final list of qualified candidates following the completion of the vetting process and any subsequent appeals.

The subsequent step, the national executive elections, will select the party's officers to manage its affairs as it prepares for the 2028 general election.
