Floodwater fish warning: Why Bihar has advised people against eating them

Bihar's Animal and Fisheries Resources Department has warned people not to buy, sell, or eat fish caught in the floodwaters following the recent Nepal flash floods. Fish contaminated by sewage, animal waste, dead animals, and other pollutants are at risk of carrying harmful microorganisms. Experts advise against consuming such fish due to potential food-borne illnesses, dehydration, and serious infections, especially in vulnerable populations like children, older adults, and those with weakened immunity.

Cooking may reduce some risks but cannot guarantee safety when the fish's source is uncertain. Symptoms of food-borne illness include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, dizziness, and breathing difficulties. If symptoms appear, medical attention should be sought promptly.
