Firefox’s AI Switch Is Off. Telemetry Isn’t

A recent analysis of Firefox versions 148 and 155 found that the AI kill switch disables generative AI features but leaves telemetry and advertising untouched. The AI kill switch, introduced by Mozilla CEO Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, has been described by many as the most important AI feature. However, after its release, only one percent of users reportedly turned off all AI features, while three percent disabled individual features.

The CEO's interpretation is that AI has no fixed definition, with most users leaving translation enabled while rejecting generative features. Despite the low usage of the AI kill switch, Mozilla's leadership claims that the most important AI feature may be the ability to turn it off.
