Enforcing SC Ruling: EC Should Fund Party Primaries – Asiedu Nketia

Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Chairman of Ghana's ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), has proposed that the Electoral Commission (EC) should receive funds from the national budget to finance internal party elections. Speaking on Onua TV Maakye show, Nketia argued that this would alleviate the financial strain on political parties and candidates, as well as reduce the influence of money in politics.

He suggested that this move would ensure party primaries align with democratic principles and would be a more democratic process compared to Nigeria, where electoral management bodies do not supervise internal party elections. Nketia questioned why political parties continue to fund the EC for its constitutional duty, as the rising cost of organizing internal elections has become a burden for parties, which rely heavily on membership fees and filing fees as their primary income sources.
