Diesel prices should have dropped yesterday, so why are drivers in Spain not seeing it?

Spanish drivers are questioning why they are not seeing the promised diesel price drop that was set to take effect on Tuesday September 1. The government's diesel discount, worth more than five euros per tank, was intended to reduce costs for hauliers and everyday commuters alike. However, Spain’s National Federation of Transport Associations (Fenadismer) found that many filling stations across the country had not applied the reduction, accusing retailers of poor transparency.

Fenadismer believes some stations might have even increased prices in the days leading up to the discount, making it appear as though the price had not changed even after the tax cut was applied. The federation has formally requested the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Spain’s National Commission for Markets and Competition (CNMC) to investigate and sanction any stations found to have manipulated their prices.

Fuel companies and the government have yet to comment on the accusations. The expanded discount was meant to cut around five euros off a full 55-litre diesel tank, which could add up for regular drivers filling up multiple times a week. Fenadismer continues to collect price data from stations to build its case and is not ruling out collective legal action against fuel retailers if the situation is not corrected.
